The excellent automotive website BangShift.com found the Chevy Chevelle that the legendary Smokey Yunick built for the 1968 Daytona 500 is for sale on ebay. The Chevelle is notorious even though it never got to race because Yunick built so many never-bef0re-seen innovations into the car.
The race car is actually built smaller than a real Chevelle. Legend has it that Yunick pared it down to 15/16th scale to make the car smaller (creating less aero drag) without it being instantly obvious. The front bumper is also wider to act as a sort of air dam. On the underside, Yunick also reformed the floor panels into a sort of belly pan. The car used a 1967 body with a 66 nose fitted to it because Yunick thought it was more aerodynamically efficient.
But the car was so radical, NASCAR’s tech inspectors never even allowed it on the track. That makes this Chevelle quite possibly the most famous race car that never raced! And now that it’s on ebay, you can put it in your garage for a measly $950,000. Incidentally, in 77 NASCAR Winston Cup races between 1956 and 1969, Yunick won nine times. So in his entire NASCAR career as a car owner, his winning totaled $276,513, just over a fourth what this car may sell for!
